Ten top leading RTOs sign an article promoting applied research

Ten of the leading European RTOs (AIT, CEA, DTI, Fraunhofer, imec, RISE, SINTEF, Tecnalia, TNO and VTT) co-signed a position statement in the French journal “Le Monde”. This joint opinion piece from the 10 EARTO members call for a next EU long-term budget that recognises the vital importance of R&I.   Our society faces new challenges. The current COVID-19 crisis has led to disruptions and failures. However, the European research and joint funding for the development of diagnostics and vaccines have been positive exceptions. The European leaders agreed on giving an unprecedented Economic Package to preserve jobs and business continuity. In this exceptional period the world is facing, continuous efforts in science and R&I should be the most important political European objective for mitigating the socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU Economic Recovery Package will need to stimulate and prioritise European RD&I capabilities and skills in order to create a resilient, sustainable and digital post COVID-19 future. The 10 co-signatory RTOs pledge for an EU recovery plan that invests in R&I programmes, while delivering on concrete solutions to society, stimulating European competitiveness and reassuring Europe’s technology sovereignty.
