Portugal takes over EU Council Presidency

As of 1 January 2021, Portugal took over the rotating EU Council Presidency for the first half of the year, following Germany. The main priorities of the Portuguese Presidency are driven by the motto: “Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery” and are based on five action lines:
  • Resilient Europe – Promoting recovery, cohesion and European values
  • Green Europe – Promoting the EU as a leader in climate action
  • Digital Europe – Accelerating the digital transformation for citizens and businesses
  • Social Europe – Enhancing and strengthening the European social model
  • Global Europe – Promoting a Europe that is open to the world
  According to its programme, the Portuguese Presidency will promote the enhanced cooperation between Member States in health-related issues and work towards EU’s economic and social recovery, aiming at starting the execution of the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the EU Next Generation Instrument (Next Generation EU) and the respective Recovery and Resilience Facility, updating the New Industrial Strategy, supporting the implementation of the EU Green Deal and digital transformation as well as enhancing Europe’s role worldwide.   More information on the Presidency, its priorities and foreseen events
