Finland takes over EU Council Presidency

As of 1 July 2019, Finland holds the EU Council Presidency for the second half of 2019, following Romania. The priorities of Finland’s Presidency are:
  • strengthening common values and the rule of law,
  • making the EU more competitive and socially inclusive,
  • strengthening the EU’s position as a global leader in climate action,
  • protecting the security of citizens comprehensively.
According to Finland’s Presidency Programme, EU should take full advantage of research, development, innovation and digitalisation. The Horizon Europe framework programme, focused on open competition and excellence-based research, would be an essential tool in this connection. Finland will also be the first presidency to integrate the new priorities of the Strategic Agenda 2019–2024 into the Council’s work.   More information on the Presidency, its priorities and foreseen events
