EARTO Innovation Prize Ceremony 2012

4 December 2012 at Maison Grand Place, Brussels –

The 2012 EARTO Innovation Prize was awarded at a special ceremony at Maison Grand Place, located on the outstanding Grand Place of Brussels. The President of EIRMA and Director of SOLVAY Future Businesses, Leopold Demiddeleer, has kindly accepted to make the awards this year.

The EARTO Innovation Prize 2012 went to VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, which has made a breakthrough in biomass-based bio-oil production with an innovative, intelligent process that marks the beginning of a new era in the energy sector. More information about this innovation can be found here.

The independent EARTO Innovation Prize jury highly commended JOANNEUM RESEARCH, based in Graz, Austria, for its dOFM innovation, which enables tissue samples giving an entire biochemical picture of the impact of a drug and thus opening up new horizons in pre-clinical and clinical drug testing. More information about this innovation can be found here.

A key highlight of this year’s event was the publication of a major new study, conducted by the Technopolis Group at the request of EARTO, which demonstrates that Europe needs to balance its spending on research and innovation more towards problem-solving research and towards supporting post-research activities critical for innovation. The report was presented at the ceremony by Erik Arnold, Chairman of Technopolis Group.
