New approaches to finance EU Space policy

On 22 January at the Annual Conference on European Space Policy in Brussels, Industry Commissioner, Elżbieta Bieńkowska called for “the design of a smart financing approach” to space. She announced a pilot space fund backed by the European Investment Fund which will be launched in the following months and will aim to leverage up to €300 million of public and private investment for SMEs and start-ups. In the medium term, she highlighted the need for a large European Space Equity Fund.   A €16-billion 2021-27 EU space programme is being negotiated by the European Parliament and national governments in the Council of the EU. Industry Commissioner expected agreement by the end of February, while Gert-Jan Koopman, Director-General of the Commission’s budget department, said that InvestEU will also enhance space activities.   More information
